FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

(at the very least the ones you should ask your DJ)

JHow is your knowledge of various music genres??

Musical knowledge is one the most important qualities of a DJ.   You should definately test their knowledge of music.  If they can't immediately name or identify popular songs, then you might want to look elsewhere.   For example, if someone comes up and requests a Disco song, what would you play?   Just fill in the blank with different music categories.   Another example, play something we can 2-step to....   Any good DJ should be able to answer these questions without hestitation.

Do you have references?

After each event, I ask my clients if I may use list them as a reference.  Each reference is added to my recent reference page.   Click on References and you will see many successful events that we have been involved with.  I believe any reputable DJ that you consider booking should have a list of references that you can call.  Once you consider booking with Thunder Entertainment, I send out a event packet which will list several references that you may call.  This is the main reason why I release them to you.  Call them even if you just want to feel good about the decision to use our services.

Is the price too good to be true?

Have you been to a wedding and heard the comment "They hired a DJ that had the cheapest price and they were terrible".    Their sound system was horrible, played heavy metal during dinner, didn't have the correct song for the first dances, screwed up the names of the bridal party, and finally just didn't play any requests.   Most likely, the couple just hired the DJ based on price, without checking references or experience.   Choosing a DJ should not be a rash decision, it should be given a lot of thought.   If they can't provide references, talk with you in person or even provide a wedding planner, run for the hills!    Most reputable DJ's will provide these things without reserve.

Do you use a written contract?

Never do business without a written contract!!!!.  Contracts are made to protect both the consumer and the business.   Make sure you read the contract before sending in your deposit.    Some other hidden costs that you should be aware of that some DJ companies might charge you are setup, teardown, and travel costs. Some DJ companies charge you for the use of making payments with your credit card.   At Thunder Entertainment, I never book an event without a contract.  My contract offers equal protection for the client and myself.

Should the DJ provide you with a music guide or planner to assist you?

A very emphatic, Yes.   A DJ should take the time to find out your musical tastes and be open to your needs. By the same token, an experienced DJ also knows what works and what does not work. Listen to their advice. A classic example is one where a bride and groom insisted on gangsta rap for the entire reception!  Their attitude was, they paid for it even though the guest list included many senior relatives that were offended.   You need take in consideration the guests at your reception.   Common sense dictates that you might want to listen to your DJ in this case.

Do you use professional sound equipment?

Yes we do!  The term professional sound equipment is very broad term.    There are some "DJ companies" that will use home stereo type of equipment.   Most professional equipment will not be purchased from Best Buy, Circuit City, Ultimate Electronics or Radio Shack.   They will have names like Peavey, Gemini, Numark, Crown, Mackie, American DJ, Sennheiser, Shure, QSC, AKG, Ultimate, JBL, Yamaha, or Bose, just to name a few.  I know that when I first started out, I did use my home stereo equipment, so watch out.

Do I have to tip a DJ and when do I pay them?

The answer to tipping is strictly up to you. If the DJ gave you a fair price and a great performance then it is always nice to say thanks and show your appreciation. Be very cautious of those companies that make tipping part of the contract. That may be one of those hidden costs that some companies charge you.

Am I obligated to feed the DJ?

No, you are not obligated to feed the DJ.  However, it is a nice gesture to offer a meal of some sort, while everyone else is eating.  All in all, a kind gesture is often returned many times over.
